Definition
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous (benign) tumors that develop in the uterus (womb), a female reproductive organ.

A better name for these tumours would be Fibromyomata, as they always contain a varying proportion of muscle fibres.

They are also called uterine myomas, fibromyomas or leiomyomas. They can vary from pea-sized to the size of a melon. Fibroids can increase in size, decrease in size or even go away with time.

Leiomyomas are the most common solid pelvic tumour in women, causing symptoms in approximately 25% of reproductive age women.

You might hear them referred to as "fibroids" or by several other names, including leiomyoma, leiomyomata, myoma and fibromyoma.

Other names for fibroids include leiomyoma, leiomyomata, myoma and fibromyoma. Uterine fibroids typically do not cause symptoms, but depending on their size and location they may lead to very heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure.

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumours that grow in or around the womb (uterus). The growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size. Fibroids are sometimes known as uterine myomas or fibromyomas.
