Caused by Coxsackie A16, A5 and A10 viruses, and other strains, hand, foot and mouth disease is evident clinically after one week of incubation.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is the most common cause of mouth sores in children, primarily in the age group from six months to three years old. It is caused by a group of viruses called enteroviruses, most commonly, the coxsackievirus A16.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is not the same as foot and mouth disease, which affects cattle, sheep and pigs. The two infections are unrelated, and you cannot catch hand, foot and mouth disease from animals.
