About fractures
Bone is the strong tissue that forms the basis of your skeleton. It is a living tissue, made up of bone-forming cells, which produce the mineral compound (matrix) that makes your bones strong and hard.

Fractures caused by osteoporosis most often occur in the spine. These spinal fractures — called vertebral compression fractures — occur in nearly 700,000 patients each year.

Fractures are breaks in the bone that are often caused by a blow or a fall.

Fractures of the skull which may result from penetrating or nonpenetrating head injuries or rarely BONE DISEASES (see also FRACTURES, SPONTANEOUS).

Fractures occur when bone cannot withstand the outside forces applied to the bone. Fractures can be open or closed. Types of fractures include: greenstick, spiral, comminuted, transverse, compound, or vertebral compression.

Fractures from trauma often require a brace for 6 - 10 weeks to protect the bone as it heals. If there is bone in the spinal canal, you may need surgery to remove the bone and fuse the vertebrae together to stabilize the spine.

Bone fractures are classified into several basic categories. They are either closed, meaning that the skin is intact, or open, in which case the skin at the site has been damaged in some way.

Some fractures just need support to help healing. For example, a supportive tubigrip-type dressing with a supportive, rigid, shoe or boot. Progressive weight bearing on the foot can then follow as pain allows.

Bone Fractures are considered to be a medical emergency so any suspected broken bone should be seen to by a medical professional as soon as possible. While waiting for medical help the following steps should be taken: ...

Multiple fractures may lead to kyphosis, a hump-like curvature of the spine (like the Hunchback of Notre Dame).

What Are Fractures?
A broken bone is termed a fracture. This may be a simple crack or buckle in the structure of the bone, or a complete break resulting in 2 or more fragments.

Temporal bone fractures are suggested by Battle's sign (postauricular ecchymosis) and bleeding from the ear. Bleeding may come from the middle ear (hemotympanum) through a ruptured tympanic membrane or from a fracture line in the ear canal.

Vertebroplasty was first performed in France in 1984 to treat compression fractures caused by bone cancer or bone metastasis, and later to treat compression fractures caused by osteoporosis.

Kyphosis (curved back): These fractures often create wedge-shaped vertebral bones, which makes the spine bend forward. Eventually, neck and back pain may develop as your body tries to adapt.

Fractures can also occur when the bones have been weakened. For example, in osteoporosis, fractures can occur spontaneously with no known injury. Compression fractures occur most often in the lower back or lumbar area.

Hip fractures usually result from a fall.
Because osteoporosis weakens the bones and makes them much more likely to break, hip fractures occur more often as men and women get older.

Hip fractures are a significant and serious cause of sudden hip pain. Hip fractures become more common as people age because falls are more likely and bones become less dense.
