Definition
Pectus excavatum describes an abnormal formation of the rib cage that gives the chest a caved-in or sunken appearance.

 


Funnel chest (pectus excavatum): "Caved-in" chest. Usually an unimportant isolated finding evident at birth. (Funnel chest can occasionally be part of a connective tissue disorder such as Marfan syndrome).

Pectus excavatum, sometimes referred to as "funnel chest," is the most common congenital chest wall deformity. It is felt to be secondary to abnormal growth of the costal cartilages between the breastbone (sternum) and ribs.

Patients with the MEN 2B syndrome may have a slender body build, long and thin extremities, a high arch palate, and "funnel chest" (sunken chest) or an abnormally high arch in the foot.

The cause of mitral valve prolapse is unknown. It is more common in people with low body weight and low blood pressure. It is also more common in those who have a hollow at the lower part of the breastbone, called pectus excavatum or funnel chest.
