Germ cell tumors develop from primitive cells that normally mature into ova (eggs) in the ovaries of women and sperm in the testicles of men. Ninety percent of all germ cell tumors develop in the ovaries and testes. These are called gonadal tumors.

Definition
Testicular cancer is cancer that starts in the testicles, the male reproductive glands located in the scrotum.
Germ cell tumors: A type of brain tumor that arises from primitive (developing) sex cells, or germ cells.
Germinoma (jer-mih-NO-ma): The most frequent type of germ cell tumor in the brain.
Germline mutation: See hereditary mutation.
Germ cell tumor. This uncommon type of ovarian cancer develops in the egg-producing cells of the ovaries.

For stromal and germ cell tumors, part or the entire affected ovary may be removed. Since this type of tumor may be benign, surgery will enable staging and assessment of the need for additional surgery or chemotherapy.
Nonseminomatous germ cell tumors - Surgery (radical inguinal orchiectomy) is recommended for all men with NSGCT. NSGCTs are not as sensitive to radiation therapy as seminomas.

Germ cell tumors may occur in early boyhood or in adolescence. Prior to puberty, boys rarely develop tumors of the testicles. The likelihood of a boy developing a testicular tumor is approximately 1 in 100,000.

Chemotherapy with platinum agents is a standard treatment for germ cell tumors. A common and disruptive side effect of this treatment is neurologic toxicity. One way to reduce long-term side effects would be a shorter course of treatment.
