Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are rare tumors of the digestive tract that often occur in the stomach or small intestine, and also are found in the esophagus, large intestine and anus.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) belong to a group of cancers known as soft tissue sarcomas. The number of new cases in the United States annually has been estimated to be 5,000-6,000.
GIST in children is not the same as the disease in adults. Patients should be seen at centers that specialize in the treatment of GIST and all tumors should be tested for genetic changes.
In GIST, radiation therapy is not effective for treating the tumor itself, but may be used as a palliative treatment (treatment used to reduce pain, control symptoms, or make a patient more comfortable) to relieve pain.
I have stomach cancer, a GIST for seven years now.

These are tumors that start in the muscle tissue of the colon. They can be benign (noncancerous) at first, but many do turn into cancer. When this happens, they are called sarcomas.
Due to the lack of a complete definition and classification the precise incidence of GIST is unknown, however, it is estimated to be roughly 10-20 per million people per year. GIST accounts for less than 1% of all gastrointestinal cancers.

One type that forms in the wall of the stomach, intestines, or rectum is called a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). The cells of each type of sarcoma look different under a microscope, based on the type of soft tissue in which the cancer began.
95% of stomach cancers are adenocarcinomas. Rare types of stomach cancer include lymphoma, sarcoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) - these are not covered by this guidance.
