Mixed glial tumors, which include oligoastrocytoma (World Health Organization [WHO] grade II) and anaplastic oligoastrocytoma (WHO grade III), have a prognosis similar to that for astrocytic tumors of corresponding grades and can be treated as such.

We can use glial tumors (which are also known as astrocytomas) as an example. Glial tumors come in four grades.

oligodendroglial tumor
A rare, slow-growing tumor that begins in the oligodendrocytes (brain cells that nourish and support nerve cells). Also called an oligodendroglioma.

An oligodendroglial tumor begins in brain cells called oligodendrocytes, which help keep nerve cells healthy. Oligodendrocytes are a type of glial cell and are sometimes called a glioma. Grades of oligodendroglial tumors include the following: ...

Glial tumors originate from connecting and supporting brain cells called glia.

The subependymoma is a slow-growing benign neoplasm, typically attached to the ventricle wall, and is composed of glial tumor cell clusters embedded in a fibrillary matrix.

Currently, no standard treatment exists for most tumors, including glial tumors, at the time of recurrence. This is often the setting where experimental treatments are evaluated in clinical trials.

Ependymomas (65%) and astrocytomas (30%) are the most frequently encountered intramedullary glial tumors.
