Glomerulosclerosis

Glomerulosclerosis Treatment at Jefferson
Many diseases affect kidney function by attacking the glomeruli, the tiny units within the kidney where blood is cleaned.

Segmental glomerulosclerosis; Focal sclerosis with hyalinosis
Causes ...

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is scar tissue that forms in parts of the kidney called glomeruli. The glomeruli serve as filters, helping rid the body of unnecessary or harmful substances. Each kidney has thousands of glomeruli.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a disease in which scar tissue develops on the parts of the kidneys that filter waste out of the blood (the glomeruli). FSGS can be caused by a variety of conditions.

glomerulosclerosis (gloh-MAIRyoo-loh-skluh-ROH-suhss) :
Scarring of the glomeruli. It may result from diabetes (diabetic glomerulosclerosis) or from deposits in parts of the glomeruli (focal segmental glomerulosclerosis).

glomerulosclerosis - the term used to describe scarring that occurs within the kidneys in the small balls of tiny blood vessels called the glomeruli. The glomeruli assist the kidneys in filtering urine from the blood.

glomerulosclerosis: Scarring of the glomeruli, the small balls of tiny blood vessels that assist the kidneys in filtering blood and making urine.

Glomerulosclerosis is the cause, however, of an estimated 10% to 15% of cases of nephrotic syndrome, a condition that is marked by high levels of protein in the urine; low blood protein levels; high cholesterol levels; ...

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis - Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. FSGS causes collapse and scarring of some glomeruli.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (including the collapsing variant) with or without nephrotic syndrome, which may lead to renal failure, has been reported in Aredia-treated patients, particularly in the setting of multiple myeloma and breast cancer.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Characterized by scattered scarring of some of the glomeruli, this condition may result from another disease or occur for no known reason. Males are slightly more likely to have this disorder than are females.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
This is a condition where small scars (sclerosis) develop on some glomeruli. The cause is unknown in most cases.

If a kidney biopsy is performed early on, it may be possible to reach a precise diagnosis of the cause, such as membranous glomerulonephritis, IgA nephropathy (Berger's disease), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, mesangial proliferative disorder, ...

Examples of this are focal glomerulosclerosis and membranous nephropathy. Treatment may not resolve the condition and the kidneys may gradually lose their ability to filter wastes and excess water from the blood.

In adults, nephrotic syndrome may be due to other types of inflammation in the kidneys such as Membranous Nephropathy. Other forms of chronic inflammation are rare in childhood but one important type is called focal glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
