Goiter
The thyroid is one of the biggest glands of the body. It is situated underneath the Adam's apple.
Goiter, iodide: Just as too little iodine can cause thyroid disease, so may prolonged intake of too much iodine also lead to the development of goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland) and hypothyroidism (abnormally low thyroid activity).

Goiters occur in groups of people who live in areas with iodine-poor soil. These regions are usually away from the sea coast. People in these communities might not get enough iodine in their diet (iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormone).

Goiters in Babies and Children
Some babies are born with an enlarged thyroid, referred to as a congenital goiter.
Goiter is the term used to describe enlarging or swelling of the thyroid, a tiny gland found near the Adam's apple. The swollen area may be sore and tender or may not be painful at all.
Goiter became rare after iodized salt was introduced in the 1920s. In addition, iodine naturally occurs in some foods, such as water, dairy products and seafood, or may get into some foods inadvertently during processing.
