Although hay fever can begin at any age, you're most likely to develop it during childhood or early adulthood. As you get older, your symptoms may worsen or improve. The severity of hay fever tends to diminish slowly, often over decades.

People with hay fever can experience their symptoms at different times of the year, depending on which pollens or spores they are allergic to.

Patients with hay fever (allergic rhinitis) tend to present with three kinds of symptoms: itching, runny nose, and congestion. For itching, the best medications are probably antihistamines.

Some people with hay fever develop oral allergies to certain fruits, vegetables and nuts. This is also called pollen-food or oral allergy syndrome (OAS).

One study of 125 people with hay fever found that an extract of butterbur was as effective as Zyrtec. Another study compared butterbur to Allegra with similar findings. Both studies were small, however, so more research is needed.
