In children orbital cellulitis may follow Haemophilus influenzae infection. These organisms invade the orbit, commonly by direct extension through the sinuses (especially the ethmoid sinus), the bloodstream, or the lymphatic ducts.

Treating sinus or dental infections promptly may prevent them from spreading to the eyes. In addition, children should be protected with the Hib B vaccine, which will prevent most of the Haemophilus influenzae infections.
