Hallux valgus. This is a deformity in which the bone and joint of the big toe shift and grow inward, so that the second toe crosses over the big toe.

A bunion (hallux valgus) is an enlargement of the bone or tissue around a joint at the base of the big toe or at the base of the little toe (in which case it is called a "bunionette" or "tailor's bunion").

Diseases & Conditions A-Z
Bunions, referred to in the medical community as Hallux Valgus, are one of the most common forefoot problems. A bunion is a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint.

For example, hallux valgus and hallux varus. In hallux valgus, the big toe is bent outward (valgus) so it overlaps the 2nd toe. In hallux varus, the big toe is bent inward (varus) at the joint.

A displacement of two major bones of the foot (hallux valgus) causes bunions, although not everyone with this displacement will develop the joint swelling and bone overgrowth that characterize a bunion.

Common age-related findings include hallux valgus, medial prominence of the 1st metatarsal head with lateral deviation and rotation of the big toe, and lateral deviation of the 5th metatarsal head.

Hallux valgus/bunion: Changes in the tissues around the big toe joint cause it to bend toward the little toe and develop a bony enlargement.

Deformity of the great toe, specifically hallux valgus, is a common complication of second toe amputations. Fusion and repair procedures may result in persistent localized swelling that generally resolves with time (Beaty; Mann).

Essentially a bunion is a foot deformity that is a result of hallux valgus which refers to your largest toe turning outwards.

The misalignment causes the big toe to move outward (medically termed hallux valgus deformity). The normal position of the big toe (straight forward) becomes outward-directed toward the smaller toes.

This is an operation performed to correct hallux valgus (a deformity where the big toe is bent in towards the other toes). Again, this tends to produce satisfactory results.
