Hammertoes

Disease HammertoeHand or foot spasms

A family history of hammertoes increases the risk of developing them, as does a foot injury or arthritis. Wearing shoes that are too tight can also be a cause. Hammertoes are more common in women than in men.

Hammertoes and claw toes are commonly caused by a muscle imbalance in the foot as a result of flat feet, traumatic injury, or disease of the toe joints.

Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a permanent deformity of the toe joint, in which the toe bends up slightly and then curls downward, resting on its tip.

Hammertoes are caused by a contraction of the joints. Hammertoes can be either rigid or flexible. Flexible hammertoes are more responsive to nonsurgical treatment than toes that are rigidly contracted and cannot be pressed flat.

Hammertoes usually are not painful at first. When they begin, they can be pushed down to the correct position. These are called flexible hammertoes. After a while, they will not go back to their normal position, even if pushed with the fingers.

Hammertoes may form in conjunction with a bunion: A bunion, which appears as a bony bump on the outside of your big toe, may force your big toe inward.

Hammertoes that are not painful (asymptomatic) and still flexible may not require treatment. In mild cases, open-toed, low-heeled, or wider shoes and foam or moleskin pads can provide symptomatic relief by reducing pressure.

What are hammertoes?
A hammertoe is a condition in which the toe buckles, causing the middle joint of the affected toe to poke out. This condition is often aggravated by tight-fitting shoes that put pressure on the hammertoe.

If left untreated, claw toes and hammertoes can become serious fixed deformities. In many cases, the inside of the shoe rubs against the bent toe joints, gradually causing calluses to form on the tops of the toes.

Foot deformities, such as high arches and hammertoes (a condition in which the middle joint of a toe bends upwards) are also characteristic due to weakness of the small muscles in the feet.

Physicians may also opt for surgery to remove corns by correcting malformations of the toes. Toes that do not bend well, sometimes called hammertoes, can cause corns to form.

Although bunions can be an inherited condition that occurs in families, shoes that are too small are the primary cause of bunions and other disabling foot problems such as corns, calluses and hammertoes.

Too-tight shoes can also cause other disabling foot problems like corns, calluses and hammertoes.

Peripheral neuropathy may also cause muscle weakness and loss of reflexes, especially at the ankle, leading to changes in gait (walking). Foot deformities, such as hammertoes and the collapse of the midfoot, may occur.

People with flat feet often develop plantar fasciitis. This is an inflammation of fibrous tissue under the skin of the sole. People with flat feet are also more likely to have bunions and hammertoes.
