The Heimlich maneuver, a series of under-the-diaphragm abdominal thrusts, is recommended for a person who is choking on a piece of food or a foreign object.

A person who is choking cannot talk, cough, or breathe, and may turn gray or blue. The Heimlich maneuver can help get the food or object out.
WARNING: Do not try the Heimlich maneuver unless you are sure the person is choking.

To perform the Heimlich maneuver on someone else:
Stand behind the person. Wrap your arms around the waist. Tip the person forward slightly.
Make a fist with one hand. Position it slightly above the person's navel.

If unable to make a sound or talk, perform the Heimlich Maneuver.
Stand behind the person, with your arms around the waist.
Place one fist at or just above the belly button with the thumb side next to the abdomen.

If you detect signs of airway obstruction, try to clear the airway with back blows or abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).

If the person has a complete obstruction and is unable to speak or breathe, the Heimlich maneuver may be lifesaving.
Treatment depends on the cause of the blockage.

Eat slowly and without distractions.
Prepare foods with appropriate size and texture.
Eating may need to be supervised.
Caretakers should know the Heimlich maneuver.

The amount of time it takes to reach unconsciousness by this method is very rapid. Help can be provided through techniques such as the Heimlich Maneuver. In a number of cases however, the person is alone and unable to gain assistance.
