Hematemesis is the vomiting of blood. The bleeding is usually from the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Definition
Vomiting blood is a backward flowing (regurgitation) of blood through the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Hematemesis: Vomiting blood.
Hematochezia: Bright red blood in the stool, usually from the lower gastrointestinal tract -- the colon or rectum -- or from hemorrhoids. The term "hematochezia" is rarely used.

Considerations
It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between vomiting blood and coughing up blood (from the lung) or a nosebleed.

Hematemesis is vomiting of red blood and indicates upper GI bleeding, usually from an arterial source or varix. Coffee-ground emesis is vomiting of dark brown, granular material that resembles coffee grounds.

Does individual complain of vomiting bright red blood (hematemesis) or of vomitus that looks like coffee grounds?
Has individual noticed tarry, black stools (melena) or dark or bright red blood in the stool (hematochezia)?

Kids who have peptic ulcer disease can have ulcers that bleed, causing hematemesis (bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds) or melena (stool that's black, bloody, or looks like tar).

Patients with ulcer bleeding may report black tarry stools (melena), weakness, a sense of passing out upon standing (orthostatic syncope), and vomiting blood (hematemesis).

Aside from those mentioned below, symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding also include vomiting blood (hematemesis). Vomited blood may be red, or black like coffee grounds.

Mesenteric angina is characterized by epigastric or periumbilical postprandial pain and may be associated with hematemesis, hematochezia, melena, diarrhea, nutritional deficiencies, and weight loss.

Later on, the disease progresses and severe abdominal pain, massive ascites, hematemesis (vomiting blood) and bloody diarrhea appear. Toxemia develops, then shock, leading to death (25% to 60% of cases).
