Hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a disease in which the number of platelets suddenly decreases, and the body's red blood cells are destroyed. Kidney failure occurs simultaneously.

Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) often occurs after a gastrointestinal infection with E. coli bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7).

Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a disease that primarily affects kidney function. This condition, which can occur at any age, causes abnormal blood clots (thrombi) to form in small blood vessels in the kidneys.

Causes
This disease may be caused by the lack of an enzyme (a type of protein) that is involved in blood clotting. Not having enough of this enzyme causes clotting to occur.

Definition Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is a rare condition that affects mostly children under the age of 10, but also may affect the elderly as well as persons with other illnesses.

Complications: The hemolytic-uremic syndrome may complicate shigellosis due to S. dysenteriae type 1 in children. Secondary bacterial infections may occur, especially in debilitated and dehydrated patients.
