Hereditary ataxia
Hereditary ataxias are caused by defects in the genes that a person inherits from their parent(s). These defects are known as genetic mutations.

Hereditary ataxias
Some types of ataxia and some other conditions that cause ataxia are hereditary. If you have one of these conditions, you were born with a defect in a certain gene that makes abnormal proteins.

hereditary ataxias
These ataxias are caused by a deficit in a gene that is present from the start of a person's life and can be either dominantly inherited or recessively inherited.

Hereditary ataxia can be separated into types caused by a metabolic defect, and those which fit the mold of a named disorder.

Hereditary ataxias: Hereditary ataxias may be autosomal recessive or autosomal dominant.

The hereditary ataxias are a group of neurological disorders (ataxias) of varying degrees of rarity that are inherited, in contrast to a related group of neurological disorders that are acquired through accidents, injuries, or other external agents.

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), which is also called spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, is a rare hereditary ataxia (ataxia is a medical term meaning lack of muscle control).

There is no cure for the hereditary ataxias. If the ataxia is caused by another condition, that underlying condition is treated first. For example, ataxia caused by a metabolic disorder may be treated with medications and a controlled diet.

Prior to the description of ABL in 1950, it is believed that people with ABL were diagnosed as having either Friedreich ataxia (a more common form of hereditary ataxia) or some other neurologic disorder.

Hereditary ataxia, a group of genetic diseases that affect the central nervous system and cause loss of motor control, is of particular interest. Some experts believe that hereditary ataxia may supply clues for genetic causes of RLS.
