Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disorder of iron storage characterized by excessive intestinal absorption of dietary iron.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is mainly caused by a defect in a gene called HFE, which helps regulate the amount of iron absorbed from food. The two known mutations of HFE are C282Y and H63D. C282Y is the most important.

The gene for hereditary hemochromatosis was identified in 1996. The gene is referred to as HFE. The HFE gene can be identified in blood testing of 90 percent of patients with northern European ancestry.
