What is hereditary pancreatitis?
Hereditary pancreatitis (HP) is a condition associated with recurrent pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

 


Hereditary pancreatitis
The inherited form of pancreatitis is marked by recurrent attacks of pain, nausea, vomiting and fever lasting anywhere from two days to two weeks. In the majority of cases, the acute bouts progress to chronic pancreatitis.

There is a very rare form of chronic pancreatitis known as hereditary pancreatitis, which is caused by genetic mutations that a person inherits from their parents.

Hereditary pancreatitis usually begins in childhood but may not be diagnosed for several years. A person with hereditary pancreatitis usually has the typical symptoms that come and go over time. Episodes last from 2 days to 2 weeks.

Hereditary pancreatitis can present in a person younger than age 30, but it might not be diagnosed for several years. Episodes of abdominal pain and diarrhea lasting several days come and go over time and can progress to chronic pancreatitis.

Alcohol consumption, a diet rich in animal fat and chronic pancreatitis may also be risk factors. People with a condition called hereditary pancreatitis are also at increased risk for getting pancreatic cancer.

In many cases chronic pancreatitis is caused by prolonged alcohol use. It can also be caused by metabolic or genetic disorders. Very rarely, chronic pancreatitis may run in families (hereditary pancreatitis).

A study group based at Liverpool University called EUROPAC (European Registry for Familial Pancreatic Cancer and Hereditary Pancreatitis) is researching the causes of pancreatic cancer.

Microlithiasis (tiny gallstones) causes some cases of chronic pancreatitis. Rare causes include hereditary pancreatitis, hyperparathyroidism, and obstruction of the main pancreatic duct caused by stenosis, stones, or cancer.
