What is a herniated disk?
Your spine (backbone) is made up of vertebrae (bones) and disks. Disks are like soft cushions between the bones of the spine. The disks in the spine let you move your backbone.

With a lumbar (lower back) herniated disk, you may have sharp pain in one part of the leg, hip, or buttocks and numbness in other parts. You may also feel the sensations on the back of the calf or sole of the foot. The affected leg may feel weak.

Herniated disks can often be prevented by keeping your weight down, eating a proper diet, and exercising to keep your muscles firm. Strong, flexible muscles can stabilize your spine and protect it from injury.

Herniated disk
Introduction
When your back hurts, everyday activities can become difficult or even intolerable. Sitting, bending and twisting can cause sharp pain, a dull ache, or annoying tingling and numbness.

Herniated disk (side view and cross-section)
The gel-like center (nucleus) of a disk may protrude into or through the disk's outer lining. This herniated disk may press directly on the nerve roots that become the sciatic nerve.

Herniated disk (or slipped disk)—the cushions between the bones of your spine bulge out of place and press on the nerve as it exits the spinal column

Herniated disks often cause no symptoms, or they may cause symptoms and signs in the distribution of affected nerve roots. Pain usually develops suddenly, and back pain is typically relieved by bed rest.

A herniated disk puts pressure on nerves resulting in pain. Herniated disks are most likely to occur in the lower back.

Common Causes
A common cause of neck pain is muscle strain or tension. Usually, everyday activities are to blame.

A CT scan of the spine may be performed to assess the spine for a herniated disk, tumors and other lesions, the extent of injuries, structural anomalies such as spina bifida, blood vessel malformations, or other conditions.

my husband has been diagnosed with a slipped or herniated disk, as well as a bulging disk. the doctor is waiting to see how things go before he does surgery. what kind of exercise or physical therapy is good for a herniated disk?

He thought it might have been a herniated disk, gave me pain pills, and suggested that I take a break. I had an adverse reaction to the medication and ended up in the hospital.

Compressed nerves in the lumbar spine are often the result of a bulging (herniated disk). This compression frequently leads to pain along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends down the back of each leg.

This test is used to detect a herniated disk . This occurs when a disk in the spine bulges from its proper place. Disks are small, circular cushions between the vertebrae (bones) in the spine.

If your Sciatica is the result of a herniated disk (slipped disk), a physical therapist will probably play a vital role in your recovery.

Lumbar Disk Disease (Herniated Disk)
Lumbar disk disease is caused by a change in the structure of a spinal disk. Most of the time, disk disease is a result of aging and the degeneration that occurs within the disk.

Seventy percent of cases of herniated disks leading to cauda equina syndrome occur in people with a history of chronic low back pain, and 30% develop cauda equina syndrome as the first symptom of lumbar disk herniation.

Usually, sciatica is caused by a herniated disk in the spine that presses on the sciatic nerve. Other causes that may put pressure on the sciatic nerve may include the following:

The aim of the surgery is to remove the portion of the herniated disk which is exerting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Another type of surgery called spinal stenosis involves removal of the bone that is exerting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Most cases of neck pain are treated medically. In some cases surgery is needed. The type of surgery will depend upon the cause of pain. For example, if you have a herniated disk in your neck, surgery will remove part of the disk.
