What is herpes encephalitis?
Herpes encephalitis is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of herpes virus infection. Encephalitis is an inflammation or infection of the brain and central nervous system (CNS).
Herpes encephalitis can cause rapid death if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Therefore, medication is usually started when the doctor suspects herpes to be the diagnosis without waiting for the confirmatory results.
Herpes Encephalitis. Each year in the U.S., herpes accounts for about 2,100 cases of encephalitis, a rare but extremely serious brain disease. Untreated, herpes encephalitis is fatal over 70% of the time.

Antiviral medications may be prescribed for herpes encephalitis or other severe viral infections. Antibiotics may be prescribed for bacterial infections. Anticonvulsants are used to prevent or treat seizures.

The antiviral agent acyclovir is effective only against herpes encephalitis. Treatment of all other forms of encephalitis is entirely supportive.
Of concern is a relapse rate of about 25% in patients who have been successfully treated for herpes encephalitis. It is not clear whether all such relapses are a reactivation of the herpes virus or whether they are caused by a different virus.
