After treatment with penicillin, a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction may occur 2-12 hours after treatment starts. This reaction is the result of the dying bacteria and may cause previous symptoms to transiently worsen.

Early treatment of syphilis can result in Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, which is caused by the sudden release of toxins from the syphilis bacteria as they are destroyed. These toxins can aggravate symptoms.

In about 10 to 15 percent of individuals with early Lyme disease, substances released by the dying bacteria cause a brief worsening of symptoms (called a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction).

During the first day of antibiotic treatment, many patients experience the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Researchers believe that this reaction occurs because so many bacteria are dying at once.

As with other treatments for syphilis, the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction has been reported.
