Hodgkin disease is a type of lymphoma (Hodgkin lymphoma), a cancer that starts in cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are part of the body's immune system.

Hodgkin disease is a type of lymphoma, a cancer in the lymphatic system. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008 about 8,220 new cases will be diagnosed.
Hodgkin disease
A cancer of the immune system that is marked by the presence of a type of cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell. The two major types of Hodgkin disease are classical Hodgkin lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin Disease
Hodgkin's disease is characterized by the presence of malignant cancer cells, specifically called Reed-Sternberg cells in one or more of the lymphatic organs.
Hodgkin disease - A type of lymphoma, a cancer in the lymphatic system; a rare disease, accounting for less than 1 percent of all cases of cancer in the US, and occurs most often in people between the ages of 15 and 34, and in people over age 55.
Hodgkin disease: A type of lymphoma, a cancer that develops in the lymph system, part of the body's immune system. Because there is lymph tissue in many parts of the body, Hodgkin disease can start in almost any part of the body.
Hodgkin disease affects around 1400 people a year in the UK and around 300 people die of it. Treatment of this disease is arduous but successful, with 5 and 10 year survival rates of over 80%. There is no screening programme for Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Hodgkin disease develops from a specific abnormal B lymphocyte lineage. NHL may derive from either abnormal B or T cells and are distinguished by unique genetic markers.

Hodgkin lymphoma (H, Hodgkin disease), described by Thomas Hodgkin in 1832, was the first form of lymphoma described and defined. Other forms were later described and there was a need to classify them.
Hodgkin lymphoma, or Hodgkin disease, is named for Thomas Hodgkin, M.D., who determined it to be a new disease in 1832. All other types of lymphoma are of the non-Hodgkin type.
Hodgkin disease is diagnosed when abnormal tissue is detected by a pathologist after a biopsy of an enlarged lymph node. Treatment usually includes radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Regular follow-up examinations are important after treatment.
Burkitt's or non-Burkitt's lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin disease in which the cells are undifferentiated and diffuse. This has also been referred to as small non-cleaved cells.
