Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS; formerly known as hyaline membrane disease ) is the most common lung disease of premature infants , which generally occurs in infants whose lungs are not fully developed.

Group B streptococcal infection and hyaline membrane disease are common illnesses that affect such infants.

The commonest cause of death among premature infants is the respiratory distress syndrome, also called "hyaline membrane disease." The latter is really not a good name for the condition, as no real membrane is present.

Treatment of newborn anemia depends on the severity of symptoms, the level of Hgb, and the presence of any other diseases that may affect oxygen delivery, such as lung or heart disease or hyaline membrane disease.

Infant respiratory distress syndrome was previously known as hyaline membrane disease. Infant respiratory distress syndrome is caused by lack of surfactant in the lungs of premature infants. This surfactant is chemically di-palmitoul-lecithin.

Most neonates with early-onset GBS (and many with L. monocytogenes) infection present with respiratory distress that is difficult to distinguish from hyaline membrane disease.

Adhesive atelectasis is due to an abnormality in surfactant production. The airway is patent, but, due to abnormal surface tension, the alveoli have collapsed. This is characteristic of hyaline membrane disease.

It also helps keep the lungs elastic. This type of atelectasis can be caused by congenital disorders such as hyaline membrane disease. Without surfactant, the alveolar walls alone cannot keep the alveoli open.

However, it may be difficult to tell whether the problem is TTN or another kind of respiratory problem such as respiratory distress syndrome (also known as hyaline membrane disease).
