Hydrocephalus / Ventricular Shunts
What is hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus occurs when too much cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up within the chambers (ventricles) inside the brain.

HYDROCEPHALUS
What is Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain.

HYDROCEPHALUS (Gr. iiSwp, water, and Ke4laX', head), a term applied to disease of the brain which is attended with excessive effusion of fluid into its cavities. It exists in two forms - acute and chronic hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus and congenital hydrocephalus facts
Hydrocephalus is the buildup of too much cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Normally, this fluid cushions your brain. When you have too much, though, it puts harmful pressure on your brain.

Hydrocephalus: Hydrocephalus is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. The fluid is often under increased pressure and can compress and damage the brain.

About Hydrocephalus
The brain produces continuously. CSF circulates through the spinal column and over the outside of the brain.

What is Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus can be defined as increased volume of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain. This may be due to:
1) Too much CSF produced
2) An obstruction of CSF flow
3) Problem with absorption of CSF ...

(h´´drsf´ls), also known as water on the brain, developmental (congenital) or acquired condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of body fluids within the skull.

Hydrocephalus is an abnormality of the normal dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF is a water-like fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.

Hydrocephalus is a build up of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling. Hydrocephalus means "water on the brain."

Untreated hydrocephalus has a 50-60% death rate, with the survivors having varying degrees of intellectual, physical, and neurological disabilities.

Diseases & Conditions A-Z
Hydrocephalus is a condition in which excess fluid builds up in your brain. The word hydrocephalus comes from the roots hydro meaning "water" and cephalus meaning "head.

WHAT IS HYDROCEPHALUS?
Before discussing normal pressure hydrocephalus, it is necessary to understand hydrocephalus and the role of cerebrospinal fluid (abbreviated CSF).

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is another rare disorder in which fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord is unable to drain normally.

Overview
Amelia, cleft lip, palate, hydrocephalus, iris coloboma (medical condition): A congenital condition that results in several facial abnormalities.

Hydrocephalus
Some tumors, particularly medulloblastomas, interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and cause hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the skull). This causes a build-up fluid in the ventricles (the cavities) in the brain.

An excess of CSF is produced (rare)

Hydrocephalus - the abnormal build-up of cerebrospinal fluid within the skull. In babies, this can cause the head to enlarge.
Infection - various infections of the brain can cause alterations to cerebrospinal fluid.

Hydrocephalus. This accumulation of excess fluid within the brain may require placement of a flexible tube (shunt) to divert and drain the cerebrospinal fluid to another area of the body.
Paralysis.

Hydrocephalus: An abnormally increased amount of cerebrospinal (brain) fluid inside the skull. Usually this is because the fluid is not circulating properly.

Hydrocephalus (pronounced hydro - cef- a- luss) is when too much fluid collects in the spaces in the brain. The extra fluid causes pressure on the brain tissue so that it can't work properly.

Hydrocephalus
Reasons for Procedure
This type of shunt is used to treat hydrocephalus . It happens when there is too much fluid in the brain. Extra fluid can cause increased pressure. This pressure can damage sensitive brain tissues.
