Hyperandrogenism, (signs of male-like traits, such as hirsutism) and/or hyperandrogenemia (excess blood levels of androgens). Androgens are hormones such as testosterone that in excess quantities cause such symptoms as hirsutism and acne.

Persistent adrenarche syndrome (adrenal SAHA) and alopecia of adrenal hyperandrogenism is treated with adrenal suppression and antiandrogens. Adrenal suppression is achieved with glucocorticosteroids.

Other characteristics include the absence of menstruation (amenorrhea) or irregular menstruation, failure of the ovary to release eggs (anovulation), elevated levels of the male hormones known as androgens (hyperandrogenism), ...

The elevated levels of androgens (hyperandrogenism) can cause obesity, facial hair, and acne, although not all women with PCOS have such symptoms. Other male characteristics, such as deepening voice and clitoral enlargement, are rare.

The clinical spectrum of the condition is broad, ranging from asymptomatic to severe cases of hyperandrogenism, female and male infertility, fatigue and/or hypertension with or without hypokalemic alkalosis (Table 1).

Menstrual dysfunction: infrequent menstrual periods where no egg is released;
Clinical or laboratory evidence of hyperandrogenism (e.g. increased body hair, acne, high levels of testosterone on testing);
Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.
