The parathyroid glands help control calcium use and removal by the body. They do this by producing parathyroid hormone, or PTH.
People with hyperparathyroidism sometimes develop calcium stones. Treatment in these cases is usually surgery to remove the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck. In most cases, only one of the glands is enlarged.
Secondary hyperparathyroidism - Excessive production of the parathyroid hormone in response to low blood calcium caused by another condition (e.g. renal osteodystrophy).
The diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism may be assisted by ordering a serum parathyroid hormone level. Also, a 24-hr urine collection for calcium may be done to help diagnose this condition.
