Hypertensive retinopathy refers to damage to the retina of the eye that is caused by high blood pressure. The retina is the light-sensing layer of nerves at the back of the eyeball.

Hypertensive retinopathy results from prolonged hypertension, which produces retinal vasospasm and consequent damage to and narrowing of the arteriolar lumen.

Hypertensive retinopathy
High blood pressure can affect the vessels in the eyes. Some blood vessels can narrow. The blood vessels can thicken and harden (arteriosclerosis). There will be flame-shaped hemorrhages and macular swelling (edema).

Hypertensive retinopathy occurs in people who have high blood pressure (hypertension). It results from the thickening of the small arteries.
