Hyperthyroidism: Overview
The leading cause of hyperthyroidism (also known as thyrotoxicosis or 'overactive thyroid') is Graves' disease.

HYPERTHYROIDISM OVERVIEW
Hyperthyroidism is the medical term for an overactive thyroid (hyper = excessive). In people with hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone. The condition is often referred to as an "overactive thyroid."
Causes ...

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive, and makes too much thyroid hormone (called thyroxine [T4 ] and triiodothyronine [T3 ]). Hormones are substances that affect and control many important functions in the body.

Hyperthyroidism may result from increased synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones (thyroxine [T4] and triiodothyronine [T3]) from the thyroid, caused by thyroid stimulators in the blood or by autonomous thyroid hyperfunction.

About hyperthyroidism
Your thyroid is an endocrine gland. This means that it secretes hormones into your bloodstream. Hormones are chemicals produced by your body to help regulate how your cells and organs work.

Hyperthyroidism is the presence and production of too much of either or both of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T-4) and thyroxine (T-3) in the body. It is caused by several illnesses.

Hyperthyroidism means an overactivity of the thyroid gland, resulting in too much thyroid hormone in the bloodstream. The oversecretion of thyroid hormones leads to overactivity of the body's metabolism.

Hyperthyroidism can interfere with your menstrual cycle, leading to irregular or infrequent periods. This may affect your ability to ovulate, making it more difficult for you to get pregnant.

Hyperthyroidism (the presence of too much thyroid hormone),
Ophthalmopathy specifically involving exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyeballs),
Dermopathy with skin lesions.

Hyperthyroidism is overactivity of the thyroid gland. This means the gland makes too much thyroid hormone. Too much hormone speeds up chemical reactions in the body. This causes mental and physical changes.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine; speeding up your metabolism and sometimes leading to serious complications.

However, hyperthyroidism can also be caused by taking too much thyroid hormone medication for hypothyroidism. This is called factitious hyperthyroidism.
