Ichthyosis is a heterogeneous family of at least 28, generalized, mostly genetic skin disorders. All types of ichthyosis have dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin.

Ichthyosis vulgaris
Inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, ichthyosis vulgaris becomes apparent within the first year of life.
The skin shows retained sheets of keratin.
There is often an associated follicular plugging.

Ichthyosis is scaling and flaking of skin ranging from mild but annoying dryness (xeroderma) to severe disfiguring disease (inherited ichthyosis). Ichthyosis can also be a sign of systemic disease. Diagnosis is clinical.

Ichthyosis is one of the most common inherited skin conditions. It may begin in a child as young as 4 years old. It usually disappears during adulthood, and may reappear when a person becomes elderly.

Lamellar ichthyosis is a condition that mainly affects the skin. Infants with this condition are typically born with a tight, clear sheath covering their skin called a collodion membrane.

Normally, dry skin isn't serious, but it can make you uncomfortable. Some serious dry skin conditions, called ichthyosis, can be disfiguring and cause problems.

Dry skin can be a symptom of other skin conditions. Skin conditions often associated with dry skin include eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and ichthyosis (an inherited condition causing marked flaking of the skin).

Genes also play a role. If relatives suffer from dry skin, you're more likely to develop the condition. In extreme cases, fish-like scaling of the skin is sometimes seen (ichthyosis).

If the disease progresses, other symptoms may include deafness, loss of the sense of smell (anosmia), problems with balance and coordination (ataxia), dry and scaly skin (ichthyosis), and heartbeat abnormalities (cardiac arrhythmias).
