Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues and organ cells.

Some autoimmune disorders, such as psoriasis, run in families and may have a genetic component. Although no one knows for sure what causes an autoimmune response, some triggers have been identified.

People with autoimmune disorders that affect the bones, joints, or muscles may need help with movement or other functions.
