Inclusion Conjunctivitis A fairly common, acute ocular inflammation, inclusion conjunctivitis results from infection by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Definition Inclusion conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, or white of the eye. In the neonate this condition is part of a larger group of eye diseases called neonatal conjunctivitis.
Neonatal and adult inclusion conjunctivitis result from exposure to infected genital secretions. It is transmitted to the eye at birth or by fingers and occasionally by the water in swimming pools, poorly chlorinated hot tubs, or by sharing makeup.
inclusion conjunctivitis Inclusion conjunctivitis is caused by an infection with chlamydia trachomatis. The symptoms include moderate drainage from the eyes, redness of the eyes, swelling of the conjunctiva, and some swelling of the eyelids.
Serovars A, B, Ba, and C cause trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis; D through K cause sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) localized to mucosal surfaces; L1, L2, and L3 cause STDs that lead to invasive lymph node disease (lymphogranuloma venereum).
Ocular infection (trachoma or adult inclusion conjunctivitis) is transmitted through contaminated hands, droplets, clothing, and flies. Respiratory infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae is transmitted from person to person through infectious aerosols.
