Definition
Septic arthritis is a serious infection of the joints caused by bacteria. This infection causes the joint to be filled with pus cells, which in turn release substances directed against the bacteria.

How is infectious arthritis diagnosed?

Reactive arthritis is a group of inflammatory conditions that involves the joints, urethra, and eyes. There may also be sores (lesions) on the skin and mucus membranes.

Infectious arthritis is another from of joint pain, soreness, stiffness and swelling which is caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. However, mostly the knees get affected with this infection. Muscle strain can also be a cause of hand pain.

We have mentioned rheumatoid, osteo, infectious arthritis and gout. Other important categories are ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammation of the spine, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and lupus.

(This is called an "effusion.") The joint may be tender when it is gently pressed, and may be warm and red (especially in infectious arthritis and autoimmune arthritis). It may be painful or difficult to rotate the joints in some directions.
