Infective Endocarditis
Infective endocarditis is an infection that can seriously damage heart valves and cause other serious complications if it is not treated quickly with antibiotics.

Infective Endocarditis
What is bacterial endocarditis?
Bacterial endocarditis (BE, also called infective endocarditis) is an infection of the heart valves or the heart's inner lining (endocardium).

Infective endocarditis is infection of the endocardium, usually with bacteria (commonly, streptococci and staphylococci) or fungi. It causes fever, heart murmurs, petechiae, anemia, embolic phenomena, and endocardial vegetations.

Infective endocarditis is a serious infection of the endocardium (the smooth interior lining of the heart ) and/or the heart valves. Although several different types of organisms can cause endocarditis, it is usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Infective Endocarditis
Acute malignant or ulcerative endocarditis occurs in certain forms of septicaemia or of pyaemia.

Infective endocarditis (IE) occurs if bacteria, fungi, or other germs invade your bloodstream and attach to abnormal areas of your heart. Certain factors increase the risk of this happening.

Infective endocarditis is an infection of the heart. Because the heart does not receive blood directly, if bacteria manages to attach itself to the heart and infect it, white blood cells are unable to reach the heart to fight off the infection.

People with some types of heart defects, including VSD, are at greater risk in their lifetime of developing infective endocarditis, an infection of the inner surface of the heart caused by bacteria in the bloodstream.

Some heart defects, and the repair of defects, create changes to the surface of the heart in which bacteria can become stuck and grow into an infection (infective endocarditis).

However, most cases of non-infective endocarditis result from underlying conditions, like cancer or lupus. Treatment depends upon the likelihood of curing the underlying condition. In lupus for example, treatment undertaken would probably be surgery.

People who have a bicuspid valve are also more likely than other people to get an infection (infective endocarditis) that can cause the aortic valve to become leaky (aortic regurgitation) as well as narrow.

This disease without diagnose and treatment can present complications like post surgical wound infection, infective endocarditis in valvular heart disease and fatal septicemia in immunocompromised patients.

All patients should have antibiotic cover over the period before and following surgery. Infective endocarditis rarely responds to antibiotics alone and further valve replacement is almost always necessary.

However, people with mild MVP are often prescribed antibiotics before dental work or certain types of surgery to prevent a heart valve infection called infective endocarditis.
