Interstitial nephritis is a form of nephritis affecting the interstitium of the kidneys surrounding the tubules.

What is interstitial nephritis?
Interstitial nephritis (say: in-ter-stih-shul nef-rye-tus) is a kidney disorder. The kidneys filter waste and extra fluid from the body. Interstitial nephritis reduces the kidneys' ability to filter properly.

Interstitial nephritis may be temporary (acute) or it may be long-lasting ( chronic) and get worse over time.

Acute interstitial nephritis is also called AIN. AIN is a condition in which there is damage to the tissue around the filtering unit of the kidney. This can result in a sudden decline in the kidney function.
What is going on in the body?

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is a disease of the kidney and is an important cause of acute renal failure. The kidneys act as a 'waste filter' of the body, eliminating toxic substances while maintaining the body's electrolyte balance.

Tubulointerstitial nephritis is primary injury to renal tubules and interstitium resulting in decreased renal function. The acute form is most often due to allergic drug reactions or to infections.

Interstitial nephritis is an inflammation of the tubules and the spaces between the tubules and the glomeruli in the kidney. The condition may be a temporary lesion, or it may be chronic and progressive.

Glomerulonephritis: The glomeruli, the initial filtration system in the kidney, can be damaged by a variety of diseases, including infections. The resulting inflammation impairs kidney function.
