Is intussusception a problem confined to infancy?
Most cases of intussusception occur in children between 5 months and 1 year of age. Boys develop the condition 3 times more often than girls.

How is intussusception diagnosed?
The doctor will ask about your child's health history and symptoms and do an exam. Intussusception can be hard to diagnose, because symptoms may come and go.

What is intussusception?
Intussusception is a serious problem in the intestine. When intussusception occurs, one part of the intestine slides into another section.

What is intussusception?
Intussusception is the telescoping of one segment of intestine into another adjacent distal ("downstream") segment of the intestine.

Intussusception.
Symptoms and Signs
The initial symptoms are recurrent colicky abdominal pain that occurs every 15 to 20 min, often with vomiting. The child appears relatively well between episodes.

Intussusception is caused by part of the intestine being pulled inward into itself. This can block the passage of food through the intestine. If the blood supply is cut off, the segment of intestine pulled inside can die.

Intussusception can affect both children and adults, although most cases occur in children ages 6 months - 2 years. It affects boys four times as often as girls.

Conditions ...

Intussusception from all other causes is most common among infants in the first year of life; 1 child in 2,000 children to 1 child in 3,000 children is affected before one year of age.

Intussusception is the telescoping of one portion of the intestine into another. It generally occurs in young children.
What is going on in the body?

The intussusception is formed not only by the intestinal tube, but also by the portion of mesentery in connection with it. This being drawn in with the invaging, ted portion, presses the latter to one side.

Complications of colon cancer include bowel obstruction, perforation, telescoping of the intestine into itself (intussusceptions), and fistula formation in the small bowel, bladder, or vaginal wall.

Internal prolapse (intussusception Opens New Window). One part of the wall of the large intestine (colon) or rectum may slide into or over another part, like the folding parts of a toy telescope. The rectum does not stick out of the anus.

An oral vaccine (Rotashield) has been withdrawn after reports of a severe and even life-threatening condition called intussusception following use of the vaccine.

A number of other, more serious conditions, including intussusception (a form of bowel obstruction) or Hirschsprung's disease (a form of colon obstruction that develops before birth) can also cause rectal bleeding.

That vaccine was dropped after being linked to cases of intussusception, a rare, life-threatening blockage or twisting of the bowels. Studies of RotaTeq before its release, found no such problem.

A severe complication of intestinal adenovirus is intussusception (an intestinal blockage that occurs when one part of the intestine slides over another section like a telescope.) This is a medical emergency and most often occurs in babies.

In 1999, a rotavirus vaccine was taken off the market because it was linked to an increased risk for intussusception, a type of bowel obstruction, in young infants.

Another rare complication of HSP is intussusception of the bowel, or intestine. With this condition, a section of the bowel folds into itself like a telescope. The bowel may become blocked as a result. Surgery may be needed to correct the problem.

After carefully monitoring cases of intussusception and other adverse effects associated with RotaTeq the FDA announced in March 2007 that the vaccine does not pose an increased risk of intussusception, ...

The older vaccine was associated with unacceptably high rates of a serious bowel obstruction called intussusception . The newer RotaTeq is associated with lower rates of this condition. But, there is a small risk of intussusception with Rotarix.

Displacement of one part of the intestine into another part of the intestine (intussusception) in children older than age 4.

In up to three percent of cases the bowel may become blocked by a condition called intussusception.

Surgical problems - appendicitis, bowel obstruction or intussusception (telescoping of part of the gut).
Period pain - some girls can have pain before their periods start.
Poisoning - such as spider bites, eating soap or smoking.

Pyloric stenosis will need to be corrected by surgery, and recovery will be complete. Vomiting in a child under four can also be due to intussusception where one part of the bowel is telescoped into another.

Abdominal pain in infants and small children may be due to intestinal obstruction from atresia or stenosis of the intestine, esophageal webs, intussusception, volvulus, imperforate anus, and Hirschsprung disease.

Some parents may recall a failed rotavirus vaccine that was taken off the market in 1999 due to a possible serious complication called intussusception, a serious bowel obstruction in young infants. RotaTeq has not been shown to carry this risk.

Some more serious causes of abdominal pain in children include appendicitis, lead poisoning, or problems with the intestines, such as intussusception or malrotation.

Intussusception. Celiac disease may damage the intestines, causing this condition to occur.
Rectal prolapse. This condition of the large intestine may develop with severe celiac disease.
