Human herpesvirus 8: (HHV-8) -- The virus that causes Kaposi sarcoma.
The formal name of the herpesvirus family is herpesviridae.

Human herpesvirus 8: A herpesvirus that contributes to the development of Kaposi sarcoma, an otherwise rare form of cancer sometimes seen in AIDS patients, and to some B-cell lymphomas. The predominant route of HHV-8 transmission is sexual.

People with AIDS are prone to develop various cancers such as Kaposi sarcoma, cervical cancer, and cancers of the immune system known as lymphomas. Kaposi sarcoma causes round, brown, reddish or purple spots that develop in the skin or in the mouth.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an exception to this general rule; a known risk factor is infection with the human herpes virus 8.[2] Infection with the virus does not always result in KS.

This virus has been associated with Kaposi sarcoma, a cancerous tumor of the blood vessel walls. It's not uncommon for a person with multicentric Castleman disease to also have Kaposi sarcoma, especially if the person is also HIV-positive.
