Kidney cysts

Disease Kidney cancerKidney disease

Kidney cysts are almost always benign (not cancerous). Usually, the cysts don't cause any problems. In fact, people can go through life without even knowing that they have them.

Simple Kidney Cysts
A cyst is a closed pocket or pouch of tissue that can form anywhere in the body. Cysts can be filled with air or fluid. Cysts that form on the kidneys usually contain fluid.

Kidney cysts are found in about 33% of individuals over age 50 (Siegal). Simple cysts often do not require surgery, but larger or malignant cysts may require nephrotomy.

Kidneys - Usually, kidney cysts are discovered only when a radiology test is done for another reason. Cysts can sometimes cause back pain. If they grow large enough, they can trigger abdominal pain. Cysts can cause bloody urine.

Rarely, when kidney cysts cause obstruction of other organs or veins, you may need to undergo surgery to drain the cysts.
Bladder or kidney infections. Prompt treatment of infections with antibiotics is necessary to prevent kidney damage.

Even people who have no history of kidney disease in the family can still develop kidney cysts because of PKD. It happens when an abnormal gene is passed from one parent to the child even though the parent does not have the disease.

About 25% of children with PPB have had or have a family history of lung cysts, kidney cysts (called cystic nephroma, which is very rare), thyroid lumps (sometimes cancerous), and other childhood cancers.

Kidney involvement occurs in about 60% of people with VHL, which usually includes renal cell carcinoma and kidney cysts. The typical age that these symptoms develop is 39 years.

Kidney cysts are associated with an increased incidence of cerebral aneurysm. Symptoms usually appear later (if they do at all) and include blood in the urine, flank pain, excessive urination at night and abdominal pain.

Controlling body chemistry to maintain the mineral, salt and acid balance in the blood.

Abnormal genes are the cause, and there's no way of preventing or reversing the development of kidney cysts in affected people. But the disease varies greatly in its severity, and some complications are preventable.

To diagnose autosomal dominant PKD, a doctor typically observes three or more kidney cysts using ultrasound imaging. The diagnosis is strengthened by a family history of autosomal dominant PKD and the presence of cysts in other organs.

long-term dialysis
Patients who have been on dialysis for a long time may develop kidney cysts, which may be one cause of renal cell cancer.
high blood pressure
Patients who have high blood pressure have a higher risk for kidney cancer.

A rare inherited condition in which the kidney are composed of multiple cysts. Kidney cysts are associated with an increased incidence of cerebral aneurysm.

Cysts occur commonly in numerous tissues and organs and are often named according to their particular anatomic location (for example ovarian cysts, bladder cysts, breast cysts, liver cysts, kidney cysts, pancreatic cysts, vaginal cysts, skin cysts, ...

Less common features of renal coloboma syndrome include backflow of urine from the bladder (vesicoureteral reflux), multiple kidney cysts, loose joints, and mild hearing loss.
How common is renal coloboma syndrome?

Diagnosis of medullary cystic disease begins with a history and physical exam. Kidney function tests and urine cultures can detect infection or kidney damage. An ultrasound or CT scan can assess the kidney size or find kidney cysts.

A variety of complications outside the kidney can occur in people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). These complications are thought to result from the same abnormality responsible for the formation of kidney cysts.

Patients who have been on dialysis for a long time may develop kidney cysts, which may be one cause of renal cell cancer.
