An inflammation that begins in your urethra or bladder and spreads to one or both of your kidneys is known as a kidney infection.
A kidney infection is a painful, unpleasant illness that usually happens when bacteria travels up from your bladder into one or both of your kidneys.

A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a urinary tract infection that affects the kidneys. Kidney infections are less common than bladder infections, and are more common in women than men.
You are also more likely to get a kidney infection if you have a history of chronic or recurrent urinary tract infection, especially if the infection is caused by a particularly aggressive type of bacteria.

How does it occur?
Most kidney infections result from lower urinary tract infections, usually bladder infections.
A kidney infection is treated with an appropriate antibiotic taken for several weeks. Anatomic abnormalities may need to be surgically treated.
