Knock-knees

Disease Kniest syndromeKostmann syndrome

Luckily, knock-knees can easily be corrected, particularly when they are detected early. Physicians typically prescribe appliances such as night braces for children who have a family history of knock-knees. Orthopedic shoes may also be effective.

During childhood, knock-knees usually develop as an effort to maintain balance, particularly when your child begins to walk or if your child's foot rolls inward or turns outward.

In children aged 1 to 4 years, bone growth may be abnormal, causing an abnormal curve in the spine and bowlegs or knock-knees. These children may be slow to walk. For older children and adolescents, walking is painful.

Both bow legs and knock knees are usually noticed by parents and can be checked for using the tests described below. Either bowlegs or knock-knees, if not treated, can cause osteoarthritis in the knees later in life.

The wrists and ankles may appear swollen. The tips of the rib bones can enlarge creating a string of lumps called the rachitic rosary. Bowed legs, knock-knees, or fractures are common.
Kids with rickets tend to sweat more than average.

The result is often knock-knees, bowlegs, and deformities of the chest and pelvis. In temperate climates or the tropics, vitamin-D deficiency usually results from poor diet rather than from lack of exposure to ultraviolet rays of sunlight.

In individuals with a severe form, skeletal abnormalities can be extreme and include dwarfism, kyphosis (outward-curved spine), prominent breastbone, flat feet, and knock-knees.

Other symptoms of rickets include particular bony bumps on the ribs called rachitic rosary (beadlike prominences at the junction of the ribs with their cartilages) and knock-knees.
