Kyphosis, lordosis and scoliosis
Kyphosis, lordosis and scoliosis are three different words that are used to describe three kinds of deformities or abnormalities in curvature of the spine.

Kyphosis is a condition in which the top of the back is excessively curved and appears more rounded than normal.
While some degree of curvature is normal, a curve of more than 40 degrees would be considered a sign of kyphosis.

What is Kyphosis?
Kyphosis is a curvature of the spine that develops into a bowing of the back, which leads to a 'hunchback' or slouching posture.

Kyphosis is generally caused by an abnormal posture. Other possible causes include:
a significant fracture of the vertebra, which can cause the back to angle forward
spinal surgery
Scheuermann's disease, which results in wedging of the vertebrae.

Kyphosis is a rounding or curve to the spine. A certain degree of normal curve is seen in the spine. This article refers to an abnormally rounded back. The abnormal kyphosis is in the thoracic spine (along ribs). The three main types of kyphosis are: ...

Kyphosis can occur at any age, although it is rare at birth.
Adolescent kyphosis, also known as Scheuermann's disease, is caused by the wedging together of several bones of the spine (vertebrae) in a row. The cause of Scheuermann's disease is unknown.

Hunchback - abnormal outward curvature of the spine in the thoracic region. It is also known as kyphosis and humpback, and in its severe form a noticeable hump is evident on the back. Hunchback may be congenital,...

Types of Kyphosis
Treatment
Some degree of rounded curvature of the spine is normal. The term kyphosis is used to describe the spinal curve that results in an abnormally rounded back.

Alternate Names : Roundback, Humpback, Hunchback, Scheuermann's Disease, Dowager's Hump, Pott's Curvature ...

Kyphosis is a term used to describe both a normal spinal condition and several abnormal spinal conditions. All people have some degree of kyphosis, a C curvature in the thoracic spine.

Causes
Kyphosis can start at any age. It can have various causes, including: ...

Kyphosis - an excessive outward curve of the upper back, which is sometimes referred to as ‘hunchback'.
Scoliosis - an excessive sideways curve that can affect either the upper or lower regions of the spine.

kyphosis - a forward curvature of the back bones (vertebrae) in the upper back area, giving a "humpback" appearance.

Kyphosis and hyperlordosis

Kyphosis may cause an exaggerated outward curve of the upper (thoracic) spine. Sometimes the body compensates by developing an exaggerated inward curve of the lower (lumbar) spine (hyperlordosis)....

Kyphosis: Curvature of the spine with the convexity pointing toward the back. It is normal to have some kyphosis in the thoracic (chest area) spinal column.

Kyphosis
Labia
Liplike organs. Labia majora: two folds of skin and fatty tissue that encircle the vulva. Labia minora: the smaller folds inside the labia majora that protect the clitoris.

Kyphosis and lordosis can cause muscular strain and muscle aches.
Scoliosis, if not obvious from birth, tends to develop during childhood and teenage years, and gradually becomes more visible. Bending forwards makes it more obvious.

Kyphosis and lordosis are usually treated nonsurgically, unless significant deformity has developed.

Definition Kyphosis is the extreme curvature of the upper back also known as a hunchback. Description The upper back bone (thoracic region), is normally curved forward. If the curve exceeds 50° it is considered abnormal (kyphotic).

Cervical kyphosis, postmenopausal: An outward curvature (kyphosis) of the cervical vertebrae (the bones of the neck), creating a hump at the back of the neck.

Acromesomelic dysplasia: A rare genetic progressive skeletal disorder characterized by short limbs, a large head and lower thoracic kyphosis.

Kyphosis
Kyphosis is a forward curvature of the spine. It is a type of spinal deformity and should not be confused with poor posture.
Learning Disorders
Learning disorders are sometimes called learning disabilities.

Identify any other spinal abnormalities, including kyphosis (hunchback) and hyperlordosis (swayback).
Help the doctor determine whether or not skeletal growth has reached maturity.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by the finding of low bone mass, evidence of fracture on x-ray, a history of osteoporotic fracture, or height loss or kyphosis indicative of vertebral fracture.

AS should be suspected in patients, particularly young men, with nocturnal back pain and kyphosis, diminished chest expansion, Achilles tendinitis, or unexplained anterior uveitis. A 1st-degree relative with AS should heighten suspicion.

During adolescence, individuals with the disorder may also develop abnormal front-to-back curvature of the spine (kyphosis), particularly affecting vertebrae within the neck area (cervical vertebrae).

The CTLSO is used to treat curves high in the upper back, such as kyphosis (hunchback). The brace treatment of kyphosis in the upper back can often result in correction.
TLSO, which stands for thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis.

With multiple fractures, kyphosis (a forward hump-like curvature of the spine) may result. In addition, compression fractures are often responsible for loss of height.

An abnormal bending or twisting of the spine (kyphosis/scoliosis) is seen in about half of individuals diagnosed with Beals syndrome and can occur in early infancy. This bending and twisting of the spine tends to worsen over time.

What is the difference between scoliosis and kyphosis?
If you look at someone from the side, normally there are three slight front-to-back curves in the spine - one in the neck, one in the chest section, and one in the lower back.

Additional features of succinate-CoA ligase deficiency can include progressive abnormal curvature of the spine (scoliosis or kyphosis), uncontrolled movements (dystonia), severe hearing loss, and seizures beginning in childhood.

Scheuermann's disease or Juvenile Kyphosis is the most common cause of kyphosis (humpback) in adolescence. The cause is often unknown but it does seem to run in families. It belongs to the osteochondroses group of diseases.
