Lactic acidosis
Definition
Lactic acidosis is when lactic acid builds ups in the blood stream faster than it can be removed. Lactic acid is produced when oxygen levels in the body drop.

Lactic acidosis: Acidosis (too much acid in the body) due to the buildup of lactic acid in the body. Lactic acidois occurs when cells make lactic acid (from glucose) faster than it can be metabolized.

Lactic AcidosisThe buildup of lactic acid in the body. The cells make lactic acid when they use glucose (sugar) for energy. If too much lactic acid stays in the body, the balance tips and the person begins to feel ill.

Lactic acidosis
Increased acid levels in the plasma due to accumulation of lactic acid. This may be caused by conditions such as heart failure or kidney disease.

Lactic Acidosis/Severe Hepatomegaly with Steatosis
Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis, including fatal cases, have been reported with the use of nucleoside analogs alone or in combination with other antiretrovirals.

Lactic acidosis is an accumulation of lactic acid. This can be caused by many conditions, including prolonged lack of oxygen (from, for example, shock, heart failure, or severe anemia), prolonged exercise, seizures, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), ...

Oral sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate may also be prescribed to manage lactic acidosis. Researchers are currently testing dichloroacetate to establish its effectiveness in treating lactic acidosis.

Overview: MELAS (mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes) syndrome is a rare type of dementia.

Cyanide inhibits mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase and hence blocks electron transport, resulting in decreased oxidative metabolism and oxygen utilization. Lactic acidosis occurs as a consequence of anaerobic metabolism.

Rare reports of lactic acidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition, particularly in people with risk factors for it. Major studies, however, found no greater risk with metformin than with any of the other drugs used for type 2 diabetes.

Uncontrolled diabetes can also cause acute complications such as hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and lactic acidosis.

Metformin (Glucophage and Glucophage XR [extended-release]) are currently the only agents in this class available in the United States. Both Glucophage and Glucophage XR may cause lactic acidosis, the buildup of lactic acid in the body.

Such problems may develop any time between early infancy and late adulthood. Exercise, infections, or alcohol consumption can worsen symptoms, leading to severe lactic acidosis with muscle cramping and weakness.
