Leiomyosarcoma: A malignant tumor of smooth muscle origin. Smooth muscle is the major structural component of most hollow internal organs and the walls of blood vessels.

What is Leiomyosarcoma of Muscle?
A leiomyosarcoma is a smooth muscle tumour.

Leiomyosarcomas are staged from “Stage 1A' to “Stage 4.' At its lowest stage Leiomyosarcoma can exist near the surface of the body or deep in the body and can be less than 5cm or 2 inches.

Rapidly growing fibroids may signify cancer (leiomyosarcoma), which must be ruled out. In postmenopausal women, even slow growth raises suspicions for cancer.

Uterine sarcomas can be endometrial stromal sarcomas that develop in the endometrial connective tissue (stroma), or uterine leiomyosarcomas that develop in the muscular uterus wall.

Sarcoma. Small bowel sarcoma is generally a leiomyosarcoma (a tumor that arises in the muscle tissue that makes up part of the intestine and most often occurs in the ileum). See the Cancer.Net Guide to Sarcoma for more information.
