When many people hear "leukemia" they may automatically think of it as a disease only children get. This is not the case because leukemia is cancer of the blood cells which are made in the bone marrow and everyone has bone marrow.

Acute leukemia is defined by the rapid creation and spread of malignant immature blood cells that crowd bone marrow, making it difficult for the marrow to produce healthy cells.
Acute leukemia. In acute leukemia, the abnormal blood cells are immature blood cells (blasts). They can't carry out their normal work, and they multiply rapidly, so the disease worsens quickly.
