Leukocyte esterase is a screening test used to detect a substance that suggests there are white blood cells in the urine, which may mean you have a urinary tract infection.

 


The leukocyte esterase (LE) dipstick test is used to screen for pyuria (presence of pus in the urine when voided). LE, an enzyme found in neutrophil granules, reacts with an impregnated reagent pad to produce a blue color within 2-5 minutes.

5. Urinary leukocyte esterase is a useful screening test for chlamydial and GC infections in asymptomatic men. The usefulness of other neutrophil enzyme (elastace, myeloperoxidase) studies of urine have been reported.

As noted in the CDC 2006 guidelines for diagnosis and management of epididymitis,[8] evaluation includes first-void urine testing by dipstick for leukocyte esterase and/or microscopy looking for 10 or more WBCs per high-power field.

Leukocyte esterase - this is an enzyme of the immune system. High levels in the urine usually indicate inflammation.
