Leukodystrophy
Leukodystrophy is not a single condition but rather refers to a group of conditions that mainly affect the white (‘leuko') matter of the brain and the spinal cord.

Leukodystrophy: A disorder of the white matter of the brain, the part of the brain that contains myelinated nerve fibers. The white matter is white because it is the color of myelin, the insulation covering the nerve fibers.

Adrenoleukodystrophy is passed down from parents to their children as an X-linked genetic trait. It therefore affects mostly males, although some women who are carriers can have milder forms of the disease.

Adrenoleukodystrophy: A rare genetic disorder characterized by the breakdown or loss of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells in the brain and progressive dysfunction of the adrenal gland.

Leukodystrophy is caused by genetic defects that lead to imperfect growth or development of the myelin sheath that covers the axon.
