Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary A rare type of ovarian tumor in which the tumor cells secrete a male sex hormone. This may cause virilization (the appearance of male physical characteristics in females).

The majority of Leydig cell tumors are found in men, usually at 5-10 years of age or in middle adulthood (30-60 years). Children typically present with precocious puberty.

Arrhenoblastomas, also known as Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors or androblastomas, are very rare neoplasms of the ovaries, resulting in the overproduction of the male hormone testosterone.

The two main types of stromal tumors are Leydig cell tumors and Sertoli cell tumors. Leydig cells release the hormone testosterone, and Sertoli cells are where sperm matures. Stromal tumors may be seen during childhood.

This topic covers seminoma and nonseminoma cancer. It does not cover non-germ cell testicular cancers, such as Leydig cell tumors.
