What are lice?
Lice are tiny wingless insects. They are less than 1/8 inch long (1 to 3 millimeters), or about the size of a sesame seed.

Lice eggs (called nits). These look like tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots before they hatch. After hatching, the remaining shell looks white or clear.

Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects. They are about the size of a sesame seed (the seeds on burger buns). Head lice cling to hairs, but stay close to the scalp which they feed off. Head lice lay eggs which hatch after 7-10 days.

Body lice
Body lice (Pediculus humanus corporis) are small blood-sucking insects that live on the body of infested humans and in their clothing or bedding, particularly the seams.

Lice can be more difficult to see than nits since they can move and hide from view. A doctor or nurse can examine the head under a special lamp, which causes nits to glow a pale blue color.

Lice are usually passed via sexual or intimate contact with somebody, as they crawl from hair to hair. It's also thought that they can live on bed sheets, towels or clothes briefly and occasionally be passed this way.

Lice are usually killed with proper treatment. However, lice may come back, especially if the source is not corrected. For example, a classroom with many infected children can cause kids to repeatedly get lice.

The lice can also be found in:
the eyelashes or eyebrows,
hair on the abdomen or back, and
facial hair, such as beards or moustaches.

Head lice are obligate parasites of humans that are found primarily on the scalp (especially occipital and postauricular areas). The adult female louse lives 3-5 weeks and lays between 5-10 eggs (nits) per day.

Pubic lice are tiny, flat-bodied, wingless insects that live on the skin. They are also called crabs because they have "claws", which they use to hang on to hair. They are light brown and the size of a pinhead.

Apply lice medicine, also called pediculicide (peh-DICK-you-luh-side), according to label instructions. If your child has extra long hair (longer than shoulder length), you may need to use a second bottle.

Yes, pubic lice can live for a while on towels and bedding. This is one reason why it's not a good idea for flatmates or friends to share personal linen.

For both head lice and body lice, transmission can occur during direct contact with an infested individual. Sharing of clothing and combs or brushes may also result in transmission of these insects.
