Lissencephaly: A brain malformation characterized by microcephaly and the lack of normal convolutions (folds) in the brain. Lissencephaly literally means "smooth brain.

X-linked lissencephaly is caused by a mutation in either the DCX gene or the ARX gene. Mutations in the DCX gene cause isolated lissencephaly, which typically does not involve any other parts of the body.

X-linked lissencephaly - caused by mutations in the ARX gene There are more than 20 mutations in the ARX gene that cause X-linked lissencephaly with abnormal (ambiguous) genitalia. These mutations usually result in a nonfunctional ARX protein.

(also called complete lissencephaly), the complete absence of gyri on the surface of the brain. The term should be referred only to type I lissencefaly.
