A listeria infection (listeriosis) is a relatively uncommon food-borne illness. The bacteria that cause listeria infections (Listeria monocytogenes) are found in soil and water.
A listeria infection may present with fever, soreness of the neck and vomiting or diarrhea. Complicated forms can lead to the development of both encephalitis and certain forms of meningitis.
A listeria infection in pregnancy doesn't usually pose a serious threat to the mother's health. However, it can cause pregancy and birth complications, and can result in miscarriage.
